In Character Information
Name: Handmaid (technically a title, but she doesn't have a real namethat wasn't made up by her)
Series: Homestuck
Canon Standing: After Scratch's Lesson
Age: 6 (almost 7) sweeps, about 15 years old
Birthday & Astrology Sign: Aries, March 21st
Arcana: Reversed Emperor
Personality:
(if you want to feel as sad as I did writing this, then listen to her theme song while you read)
Handmaid takes disobedient teenager to a whole new level.
She really, really hates her life. Ever since she arrived on Alternia, she's been groomed as to what she's to become as an adult. She hated the lack of freedom, and much like any child who was forced their entire life to do something they didn't want to do, she rebelled. She would start small at first, whining and complaining about what Scratch wanted, but over time as she began to realize it wasn't working, her reactions became more and more violent. Her anger fuse became shorter and shorter, especially as Scratch began to teach her how to use magic. Handmaid began to do many things just out of spite of Scratch, such as breaking things, going against his orders, etc. In return, especially as she became more violent, Scratch's discipline also became more violent. She grew well acquainted with the bristles of his broom, and was often smacked around for not doing what she was supposed to (or worse, such as having her oxygen constricted). Angry at her treatment and the injustice of it all, she only reacted worse and worse. She began not only making attempts directly on his life (which didn't work in the slightest since he was immortal), but she began to also make attempts on her own life. She wanted so badly to write her own fate and make her own choices that she thought death would be the best solution, and her mindset became very disturbed. The problem was, not only did she rely on him entirely to survive, he was all she ever knew. She dreamed of escaping, but she wouldn't have known what to do on her own anyways. So even though she hated her life, she knew she would be utterly lost without him. She also came to realize, though, that every attempt she made herself would never work, and that she would continue to try even though she had no idea what to do with herself. Handmaid needed outside help, and she found new hope in the man she saw beyond her fifth wall. She had turned it on one day specifically because she wasn't supposed to (anything she could get away with doing against Scratch's wishes she did, out of spite), and saw him as the answer to her problems. He did actually end up being her salvation, not that she knows it yet.
One of the major reasons she wanted to go against her fate was not just her lack of freedom, but also the horrors she saw in her future. Not only was she forced to live a life far longer than she ever should without any sort of freedom, she would have to live a life where she was responsible for many, many deaths, and the essential ruination of her kind. She herself would be responsible for every single horrible moment in Alternian history, and be feared as a horrible Demoness. Handmaid was kept in Scratch's house for almost her entire life. Just like any other abandoned, suffering little girl, she really just wanted a friend. To be loved. But instead, she was faced with a lifetime of people hating her, and causing suffering. It was a horrible fate to be resigned to. Yet at the same time, who were they that they deserved more of a life than she did? More freedom? This thinking is part of the reason why working under Scratch at Destiny Strings won't be a total horror for her. All these people, with a destiny of their own and a freedom to move as they pleased... it made her horribly jealous. And Handmaid is by no means good at controlling her emotions, and has an especially short temper. Not to mention, she'll feel as though she owes Scratch something if they were to end up in Hinoto-Ri. He's a very manipulative man, and she's not exactly the smartest girl (mostly because she had been under the influence of his manipulation her whole life). It would be easy for him to lead her to the conclusion that he was responsible for their new life in the city, one where neither of them had to follow the life fate had in store for them back home. But in return, she would have to help him with a new objective, as his Handmaid rather than English's...
She really would like some friends, though. Handmaid has it within her to be a sweetheart, but she just needs to learn how to. This isn't to say that she wouldn't possibly turn around and stab them in the back if she needed to, but Handmaid would really like to get to know some people her own age. Meet someone who isn't Scratch, or the Felt (she was always very fond of Snowman, though). Have a chance to feel kind of normal for once, and not Scratch's or the Anoli's pawn. Handmaid is very sad and lonely, and always has been since she was a child. All she's had besides Scratch and occasional glimpses of the Felt was her imagination, and she would let it run wild when she wasn't being tutored by Scratch. Imagining friends, imagining her escape, imagining she grew up on the real Alternia with a beautiful Ram Lusus like her dancestor or her alternate self, imagining she was somewhere, anywhere better than where she was... She is very much a wounded girl, much like her pre-scratch self Damara, and wouldn't be very good at being a friend, though. She would react to others her age with snippiness and sarcasm at first, very much on guard and alert, and very tight lipped about who she was and what she did (not that Scratch would allow her to speak of any of it anyways). She isn't too accustomed to acting in any way but violence and reluctant obedience these days. But she's the equivalent of a fourteen or fifteen year old girl, and can always learn new behaviors and become open to new experiences. Children are impressionable and learn rather fast, and she too could eventually have it in her to react with kindness and compassion to others. Though there would still be an underlying sense of bitchiness in her regardless, especially since anyone she would befriend would still be better off than she, and be the target of her jealousy. The best friend she could possibly have is one in the same situation as she is. Though, the main issue in attempting to be friends with anyone is how much Scratch would allow her, and her feelings of obligation, fear, and reliance on the man. There is nowhere she can go that he wouldn't see, being an all powerful omnipotent being. And he wouldn't exactly want his Handmaid to be corrupted by influences beyond his own, would he?
All in all, she's a very angry, hurt child. She wants to escape her obligations to her fate and to Scratch, but she can't. So she reacts in anger and violence, and has such a bad mental mindset that she would even try to hurt herself with no hesitation to change the way things were. She has the potential within her to be a kind, normal girl like any other young troll her age, but Scratch and her past tends to hold her back from that. She isn't even really bad, or really even good-- she's more of a chaotic neutral forced to do bad under Scratch's influence. Hopefully if she were to be accepted into Strings she can learn to grow, but until then... she's a rebellious little brat.
Also, it's worth mentioning that much like the other trolls, she's inclined to type in the color of her blood. her c0l0r l00ks like this, and she types with n0 capitalizati0n but with punctuation. she replaces 'o' with '0' t0 inv0ke a sense 0f emptiness, much like her dancest0r aradia when she was dead. any em0tes she uses will als0 have 0s, like 0_0.
Additionally, she will always write Doc Scratch as Doc Scratch and Lord English as L
rd English should it ever come up in text.
Backstory:
Because of the nature of Sburb, players and their guardians are cloned within the game to ensure that they are born. They are then delivered on meteors to their desired timepoints, the ancestors arriving thousands of years prior to the ones playing the game, and the players arriving all around the same time.
In Handmaids case, her meteor arrived very late.
She arrived on Alternia long after its destruction, approximately six centuries after they had been wiped out by the trolls entering their session of Sburb, known then as Sgrub. Scratch knew this was destined to happen, and went to pick her up from her meteor to raise her under his care. He took over the role as her 'lusus', which is essentially the trolls version of a parent. She was raised from a young age to become Lord English's assistant, a role that she was very much against. Handmaid wanted to forge her own destiny, and reacted violently against the path Scratch had set her on. The first time we meet her, she is attempting to break through the fifth wall (kind of like the concept of fourth wall, but instead allows the fictional characters to see the author in action and consequently allow the author to insert himself into the story) located in her room in order to get through to Hussie, who she believes will help her. Scratch comes in to chide her over her behavior and addresses her much like a parent would to their child, and turns the wall off. In retaliation, she angrily chucks a chair at Scratch's head, and flips him off. He addresses it as one of her 'moods', her moods being her various angry attempts to tell him where to shove it and escape his control, and he comments that such crude behavior would have to be stamped out before she could ever work for Lord English. She then begins to mercilessly attack Scratch with her magic, and is stopped by him 'taking away her breathing privileges', essentially cutting off her oxygen, as if she was a child to be sent into time out rather than being put into life threatening danger. When she realizes she's failed to defend Scratch once again, she legitimately attempts to take her own life just to try and save herself the pain and horrors she was in store for if she were to be transferred into Lord English's servitude. Handmaid sticks her wands in the electric sockets and begins to electrocute herself, preferably to death, but Scratch smacks her with a broom (which he calls his 'discipline broom') and declares that her electricity privileges had been taken away as well, not at all concerned of the mental well being of his adopted daughter after she attempts, for what is certainly not the first time, suicide.
He teleports them back to his living room to 're-educate' her on her duty, and what she would grow to become as the Demoness in Lord English's service-- meanwhile, she uses her abilities to secretly flip the switch for the fifth wall back on. While Lord English begins by telling her the story of the Signless, Hussie breaks in through the fifth wall into Handmaids bedroom. As Scratch begins the story of the Demoness, it becomes increasingly obvious why Handmaid wanted to end her fate early. Once in the care of Lord English, she would be cursed to live longer than she should have. From there, she was ordered to teleport through time and arrive in every most important moment in Alternian history, stirring up trouble, warfare, and other horrors as she went. She was the most feared person on the planet, one known to bring death and destruction wherever she came, even more feared than Lord English himself. Not only would she be responsible for the destruction and slaughter of millions of trolls, she would be responsible for shaping the planet into the terrible place it was by the time the young trolls arrived, and shaped and influenced their way to play the game to its full completion. She would only be allowed to die once the Condesce arrived six centuries after the initial destruction of the planet to take her place as Lord English's servant.
Interestingly enough chronologically, the day that the Demoness would finally be released from her curse and be allowed to die (something she had wished for for a very long time), was also the day she was destined to first enter English's service as a young girl.
Once English's story is over, Handmaid notices that Hussie has snuck up from behind him. He springs to attack Scratch with the discipline broom, and it is from this point she has been taken.
It is also worth mentioning that Handmaid as a character had a lot of similarities (though I would imagine this one was more intentional than most of Hussies supposed references) to Aradia from Charles Leland's book 'Aradia, or the Gospel of the Witches'. Aradia is the daughter of Diana (someone apparently never read their myths to know Diana is a virgin goddess but whatever), and Lucifer, which is interesting considering your mention of Lucifers influence in the Anolis actions. Aradia's character was apparently sent down to teach the peasantry magic to use to revolt against the upper class and take down the major power of the time, the Church. While I'm not very knowledgeable about this book, nor have I read it (though I just might sometime soon), I thought that it was an interesting tidbit to bring up to you guys...
Canon Powers:
Megido; Handmaid has some specific powers that are special to her particular sign, Aries. She, Damara, and Aradia can all utilize them.
+Flying: obvious enough. She can float, fly, etc using her abilities. (mind)
+Telekinesis: General stereotypical telekinesis. Manipulate objects, grab them with her powers and float them around wherever she wishes, draw them to her, etc. You know the drill. (mind)
+The Dead: She can talk to, see, and manipulate the dead. Aradia used it to have the ghosts of the trolls Vriska had killed haunt her, as an example. (mind)
Time Player; She is a Witch of Time, which translates to her being able to pop around in whatever past time point she pleases. Both Damara and Handmaid as an adult have used it to pop into important points of time to fuck things up. (time manipulation, mind)
Clockwork Majyyks; Pretty much destructive magic abilities. They flash in multiple colors, and generally are explosive and damaging and scary. She uses her wands as a channeling device, but she could also use it raw, though she would be sacrificing precision by doing so. (mind? almighty?)
Troll; As a troll she is harder, better, faster, stronger than an average human. Those of her blood caste live to around the same age as the higher end of the average human life span, but those higher up than her could live the equivalent of thousands of human years. Handmaid at a slightly further canon point than I am taking her was cursed with a longer life span than she should have as a maroon blood, but that doesn't apply to her now.
Canon Weapons|Items:
Magic Chopsticks; Wands she keeps in her hair that help her channel her magical energy. (mind)
EDIT: Quartz Timepiece; She uses these to travel through time, much like the other Aries time players. (mind)
